Swimming Lessons

Rawlins Community College has a comprehensive learn to swim programme from complete beginners to advanced levels. We have spaces for over 500 children and lessons run Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday after school, as well as Saturday mornings.

Child Swimming in Pool

We offer a range of classes and courses to cater for all ages and abilities. Most classes are 30 minutes long with some higher level classes lasting 45 minutes. Each child is assessed prior to commencing lessons to ensure that they are placed in a class suited to their ability. Swimming lessons at Rawlins Swimming Pool follow the ASA National Plan for Teaching Swimming which is a progressive teaching programme based upon sound technical and educational principles and focuses on three main areas:

1) Skill Development
2) Stroke Development
3) Understanding and Awareness

The content of the NPTS prepares swimmers to participate in a variety of disciplines and in so doing develops a more rounded and skilful performer. Great emphasis is placed on the importance of water confidence activities in all stages.

Our swimming lessons begin with parents and tots sessions (from approximately 1 year) where the priorities are water confidence and learning through play.

Swimming Teacher and Pupil

Aquatots sessions start at the age of 3. Children wear armbands and are accompanied in the water by a teacher and an additional teacher on the poolside. Main outcomes are basic propulsion, submerging the face and floating and are achieved mainly through play.

Children are usually moved to Non swimmer classes around the age where they start school. All children wear armbands with the amount of air gradually reducing as the swimming ability increases. When a child can swim 10m on their front and back they are ready to move into the next class.

Children then progress through the next levels further developing basic techniques and acquiring new skills in accordance with the NPTS.

Once an acceptable degree of basic swimming and stamina is achieved in all four strokes children are ready to move onto length swimming (45 minute lessons) where turns, diving, water safety and personal survival are introduced in addition to stroke technique.

All Rawlins staff are CRB checked and ASA qualified. For further details or to arrange an assessment please contact Claire on 01509 622827 or click here to send Claire an e-mail.
