Course Description

If you successfully complete the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in year 12 you will be able to progress to the Level 3 Diploma, worth 2 x A2 levels. You will begin by forming a production team and working to a professional brief to develop a series of screen idents, such as the Dancers idents on BBC1 or the animated idents used by BBC3. Alongside this you will learn about the industry and the careers open to you, and will do some basic broadcast journalism. You will then progress to your final film for submission in the Rawlins Annual Film Showcase, and this will really give you chance to bring together all the production skills you have developed over the past two years. You will learn about Single Camera Techniques and Research methods to help with this. You will have the freedom to work alone or as a group, and to create a short film in whatever genre you choose. The units you will complete are:

BTEC courses are valued by Universities in the same way as A Levels and therefore this opens doors into many university courses. There is a wide range of media related university courses, for example you may proceed with Media Production, you may take a more academic route into Media or Film Studies, or you may choose a course with a combination of academic and practical work. If you wish to go straight into a job after post 16 study you could look for a career in TV, Film and Video production, and you would have a good portfolio of films to impress potential employers.

Potential Careers

There are a wealth of careers in the fast growing Media industry, including: Television and Film production, camerawork, post-production, media researchers, game production, marketing and advertising, journalism, radio production.

Student Comment

I have enjoyed continuing BTEC Media into year 13 as it has given me a real feel for working in the Media industry. Towards the start of the year I had chances to work on real briefs and with external people and I think this really helped my University applications. I particularly liked working on the Film Showcase project as I was able to be more ambitious in my film-making than ever before. I am looking forward to continuing this subject at University and I think this course has given me a real head-start in my career.
